Love Wears A Stetson Wyatt Page 6

Wyatt, should we tell her our parents or what?

“I think they’ll figure it out in about three months, couldn’t we just tell them then.”

I gave him a dirty look.

“Wyatt, you’re just too afraid to tell my dad, that’s what it is.”

“No, the thought of telling your dad doesn’t scare me, but thought of telling my mom, after she gave me the sex lecture, before we went camping, scares the hell out of me.”

We pulled down Wyatt’s drive way and pulled on the side of the house. I turned and looked at him with a confused look on my face.

“Wyatt why are we at your house. I thought you were taking me home.”

“This will be your house in a few days.”

“Wyatt, you know what I meant, what’s up.”

“Ummm, I figured we’d call your dad and have him come over. We can tell your dad and my mom at the same time. That way, I can get all the ass whooping’s out of the way.”

  He did have a point.

“Okay, that sounds like the best plan.”

Wyatt pulled out his cell phone and called my dad. He ducked and dodged question about the reason for the meeting. My dad said he’d be there is about ten minutes. We got out of the truck and walked into the house. We found Mary Lu sitting in the living room, reading a book. Josh was watching TV and Jesse was in the kitchen making a snack. We sat down on the couch without saying a word. Mary Lu looked up from her book and smiled at us. Well she won’t have that smile for long.

Where have you kids been all afternoon? Dinner will be done in about a half hour, Kenna you’re staying aren’t you?

“Ummm, yeah sure if it’s not any bother.”

Just then I heard a knock at the front door. Wyatt started to get up but Mary Lu beat him to the punch so to speak.

  “Sit Wyatt, I got it.”

I her Mary Lu answer the door and Wyatt gave me a weak smile and squeezed my hand reassuringly. A few moments later a confused Mary Lu, My dad and Carson walked into the living room looking straight at us.

Wyatt stood and greeted my dad and Carson. I basically hid behind him on the couch.

“Josh, Carson, would you mind giving us a few minutes alone with Jack and mom?”

Four confused people started at Wyatt and me. Josh turned off the TV and walked by Carson and lightly slapped him on the shoulder.

“Come on Carson, let’s go eat Jesse’s snack that he’s making.”

Carson eyed me curiously, but followed Josh into the kitchen.

“What’s going on with you two? You’re not canceling the wedding or something are you dear?

“No mom the wedding is still on. Please sit, me and Kenna would like to speak to you both.”

Mary Lu sat back in her chair and my dad took the one next to it, eyeing us as he walked over to the chair. Wyatt cleared his throat and looked at me with a help me out here look. I squeezed his hand for support.

“Ummm, Kenna hasn’t been feeling well lately, so I felt the need to take her to the doctor.”

“Oh my heavens Kenna are you okay, why didn’t you say something to us.”

“Yes mom, Kenna is fine, but they did find out what is causing her to be sick.”

“Hon, what wrong, why are sick?”

I could see the worry in my father’s face and I couldn’t stand it any longer.

“Dad, Mary Lu the doctor told us……..were going to have a baby in about seven months.

Just then Jesse came running into the room.

“Oh that is priceless, Wyatt, You knocked the snot out of me for trying to kiss her. And you go and get her knocked up.”

  “Who’s knocked up?”

Carson said as he rounded the corner, with Josh on his heels.

I looked at my dad then Mary Lu, they just sat there for a few moments, to shocked by our news to even respond.

“No one is knocked up. My soon to be wife and I are going to have a baby, in about seven months.”

Mary Lu looked up at Wyatt and I felt him tense.

“I’m going to be a grandma? Really? Oh my heaven, this is wonderful.”

My dad stood up and walked over to us. He leaned down and gave me a big hug.

  “Congratulations honey, I can’t wait.”

He paused for a moment then said

“I wonder how small they make Stetsons”

  Chapter 20

I woke up the morning of my wedding with my head stuck in a toilet. Saltine crackers, my butt! I was still sicker than a dog. Finally after spending the first thirty minutes of the day in the bathroom, I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen. My stomach was doing flips and I must have looked green, because Carson jumped up and brought me a plastic container just in case I got sick. My dad came in the back door and looked at me with sympathy.

Your momma always found dry toast to work better then crackers, let me get you some. He walked over and made me two slices of dry toast and sat them down in front of me.

“Just nibble on it hon, okay?”

“How long does this last day?”

“Your momma was always the sickest the first four months or so.”

“Oh great I have two more months of this.”

It’ll get better hon, I promise. Now how long did you say you two were going to be gone?”

  “Ten days, why?”

Oh, I just wanted to know when you were going to be back is all.

I nibbled on my toast and after a few minutes I started to feel better. Carson made me a cup of coffee and within a half hour I was upstairs taking a shower and getting ready for my big day.

The weather cooperated for once and it was a beautiful late summer day. I curled my hair and put it in curls on top of my head. I put on my strapless white lace bra and matching panties, I slipped on my strapless tea length white wedding dress. I checked myself in the mirror and was quite pleased with the results.

I lifted my bouquet to my nose and smelled the gardenia sweet scent. This was my day and I knew everything would be perfect. An hour before my wedding my 22 year old cousin, Cheyenne arrived from Great Falls. She looked beautiful, in her ice blue bridesmaid dress. My dad called upstairs to us.

“Kenna, Cheyenne It’s time to leave, Kenna does Wyatt have your suitcases?”

“Yes Dad he picked them up last night. Give us just one minute.”

I handed her bouquet of Jasmine and baby’s breath. Then I hugged her.

“Thank you so much for doing this Chey, it means a lot to me to have you here.”

“I’m honored you asked me. It’s been ages since I’ve been here. It’s good to see everyone again. I miss Butte though, this will always be home. I hate that mom and dad sold the ranch and moved to Arizona, but with mom’s arthritis they really didn’t have a choice, she couldn’t handle the winters anymore. It’s just gets lonely up in Great Fall.”

“You need to move back here. In fact I bet you can stay here with Dad and Carson. Someone needs to save dad from Carson’s cooking.”

  “Girls! We need to go.”

We walked down stairs and my dad’s looked like he had tears in his eyes. He hugged me tight for a few moments and then stepped back and wiped his eyes.

“You look so beautiful hon. Your, momma would be so proud of you.”

  “I wish she was here.”

“She is Kenna she is right there in your heart.”

I dabbed my eyes with my tissue and gave my dad a kiss on the cheek.

“Okay dad, what do you say, we get this show on the road.”

Within fifteen minutes we were at the Walker ranch. I walked in the house after Mary Lu had made sure that Wyatt was outside. She spent at least five minutes hugging me and crying telling me how happy she was that Wyatt and I were getting married.

I remember walking out the kitchen door. I remember seeing how gorgeous Wyatt was with his black western tux and black Stetson. But the rest of the day was a blur.

Before I knew it and Wyatt and I were running to his
truck in a shower of rice. He lifted me into his arms and sat me on the passenger seat and a quick kiss that raised a round of cheers from the on lookers. A few minutes later we were on our way to Hawaii.

  Chapter 21

I’ve never enjoyed myself so much in my life. When we finally came out of our hotel room after 3 days, we took in tours, walks on the beaches and I was sad after nine days to be leaving this wonderful paradise.

By the time our plane landed in Montana and we got to the ranch it was late. When we entered the house and we quietly went up to Wyatt’s room. I swear I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.

I was awakened by Wyatt shaking me gently.

Darlin, your dad’s on the phone. He said he needs to talk to you.

I rubbed my eye, sat up, looked at Wyatt, put my hand over my mouth and ran across the hall. A half an hour later after soon dry toast and a small glass of ginger ale I called my dad back.

“Hey Hon, still fighting the morning sick huh? How was Hawaii?”

“It was wonderful dad, you need to go sometime. It’s gorgeous. And yes the morning sickness is still kicking my butt.

“It’ll get better, the reason, I’m calling is I would like you and Wyatt to come over this morning, I have something I’d like to show you.”

I turned to Wyatt and relayed the message. He said we could be over there in about twenty minutes.

I told dad and we said our good byes. I looked around the kitchen and noticed no one was in the kitchen and if the silence was any indicator, there was no one in the house.

  “Where is everyone?”

“I have no idea darling. I haven’t seen anyone all morning.”

After another small glass of ginger ale, I got dressed and we were in Wyatt’s truck and headed for my dad’s ranch.

As we drove down the road I noticed that there had been a new road put in on a small parcel of property that my dad owned. Hmm I don’t remember him saying anything about that. We pulled down the driveway and stopped behind Jesse’s truck. What was he doing here? I looked at Wyatt in a confused manner and Wyatt just looked at me and shrugged. What was going on?

Wyatt put the truck in park and turned off the engine. He walked around the truck and opened my door, and helped me out of the truck. My dad stepped out the front door, down the steps and scooped me up in a bear hug.

  “Welcome home Mrs. Walker.”

  “Hey, dad”

Dad walked over to Jack and shook his hand.

“Good to have you both home, finally.”

  “Thanks, Jack.”

Just then Mary Lu, Josh, Jesse, Cheyenne and Carson came out the door.

Well you two, Mary Lu and I want to give you your wedding present, so everyone load up in your trucks and follow us. I watched as Mary Lu climbed into my dad’s truck. Then Cheyenne got into Jess’s and Josh hitched a ride with Carson.

  “Wyatt, what is going on?”

“I don’t have any idea, but if we don’t get into the truck in a few seconds their going to leave us here.”

We climbed in the truck and followed the train of trucks heading back out to the road. We turned back on the main road and were heading back towards the Walker ranch. Before I knew what was going on, Wyatt was following Carson down the new road I had noticed. We went about a quarter of a mile and over a small hill and there before our eyes was a house. A house, that hadn’t been there ten days ago. I looked at Wyatt in shock. The trucks lined up in front of the house and everyone exited the trucks.

Dad, what is this? I know this wasn’t here before?

Dad held out his hand and handed Wyatt a set of keys. Wyatt and I both just stared at his hands holding the keys. This can’t be real.

Kenna, Wyatt this is your wedding present. This is the little piece of property I bought about thirty years ago. It was the old Campbell farm. We tore down the old house and Mary Lu and I got this house for a steal, because it had to be moved. Your mom had a new septic system put in and we had the well check and it’s really good.

“Dad, Mary Lu I can’t believe you did this for us.”

“Jack, Mom, I don’t know what to say, but thank you so much.”

Mary Lu stepped forward and gave Wyatt a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“Son, I think you two need to go check out your new home.”

  Chapter 22

I took Kenna by the hand and we made our way to our new home. We were about to step in the house, when Mary Lu yelled at us

“Wyatt you need to carry her over the threshold.”

For old time sake I bent down and threw Kenna over my shoulder, careful not to hurt our baby. I chuckled and smacked her on the butt. Kenna squealed and I had to laugh. We walk through the door and I set her back down, she gave me a glare and I kissed the tip of her nose.

“I’ll get you for that, Wyatt Walker.”

“Promises, promises my sweet and sexy wife.”

I took her hand and we made our way through the house. The first thing I noticed about the house was it was huge. The bottom floor had a large living room, formal dining room, a full bathroom and huge kitchen with room for a kitchen table and chairs.

We walked up stairs and the first rom we came to was a smaller bedroom. The next room’s door was closed and when we open it, Kenna was speechless as she saw what it held. It was freshly paint a pale yellow with a pale mint green trim. What really was holding her attention was the complete nursery furniture set, it contained.

She walked across the hard wood floor and lifted the large card from the crib. She read the card and the tears were trailing down her cheek. I walked over to her and read the card that she still held.

  With all our love.

  Carson

  Jesse

  Josh

I took her in my arms and kissed her head. When we turned to leave the room is when we noticed the rocking chair I had given to Kenna. It looked like it was sitting there waiting for a baby to rock to sleep.

We walked down the hall way and found 1 more average side bedroom, a large bedroom and a bathroom. The house need to be updated, but I could afford to do that. What Jack said was a small piece of property was one hundred acres and the house had to be at least 1800 square feet. And it was all ours, it was home.

  Epilogue

  End of April

I sat in the passenger seat, as Wyatt drove us home. I looked in the back seat of the truck, one more time. It made me nervous, being this far away. My whole life seemed too good to be true. I had a wonderful husband and now, we’ve been blessed with the little angel in the back seat.

How could a little human only twenty inches long, steal your heart so fast.

“Darlin, Maggie is fine. We only have a few miles to go, please try to relax.”

What seemed like forever, we pulled up in front of our home.

Wyatt removed the car seat and carried little Maggie Mae into our home for the first time. Wyatt had made Maggie a beautiful cradle, with her name carved on the top. I removed her from her car seat and placed her in the cradle that was next to the couch to sleep. We sat down on the couch and watched our little miracle sleep.

The only thought at that moment was my life was truly blessed.

  ~*~*~*~

While Kenna was up stair feeding my little Maggie Mae, I heated up a casserole that mom had brought over earlier. I put dinner in the oven and pulled out what I needed for a salad.

After setting the table I for dinner, I brought the cradle over by Kenna’s side of the table.

I quietly walked up the stairs and walked towards Maggie’s room. The door was already open and I could hear music softly playing on the small stereo that we had bought for Maggie’s room. When I peeked my head into the room and took in the sight I saw. It made my heart swell with pride. There was my beautiful wife, the love of my life, softly rocking our tiny daughter. Little Maggie Mae, was the spitting image of her mother, with a full head of chocolate brown hair. She will be a real heartbreaker when she was older. Kenna sa
t in the rocking chair I had given her, gently rock our child as she hummed softly to Maggie in a soothing manner.

I knew at this moment life didn’t get much better than this, and I knew that I needed to count my blessing every day of my life.
